Melbourne Newborn Photoshoot: What to Look for in a Photographer

27/05/2025

Choosing a newborn photographer isn’t just about pretty pictures.
You’re choosing someone to handle, pose and capture your baby in their first few weeks of life.

Here’s what you should look for – and how we do things at Niki Sprekos Photography.

1. Experience with Newborns

Newborn photography isn’t just about taking cute photos. Your photographer should know how to safely pose and handle babies. Ask how many newborns they’ve worked with and check if they have any training in newborn safety.

At Niki Sprekos Photography:

  • We’ve photographed hundreds of newborns over the past 12+ years
  • Niki is trained in newborn safety and newborn posing techniques
  • Every session is baby led. I will gently follow their cues and never force a pose
  • My goal is always to keep your baby calm, safe and content

2. Style That Matches Yours

Every photographer has a different approach. Do you prefer soft and natural or bright and bold? Look at their portfolio. Does it match your vision? Do the images feel timeless or trendy?

At Niki Sprekos Photography:

  • Our signature style is soft, timeless and natural
  • We focus on neutral tones, soft textures, and simple styling
  • No bright colours or trendy themes. Just your baby, beautifully captured
  • Visit Niki Sprekos Photography’s Portfolio to see our consistent, elegant look

3. Studio vs In-Home

Some photographers offer studio sessions with props and setups. Others may travel to your home. Choose what works best for your style.

At Niki Sprekos Photography:

  • sessions are held in our natural light studio in Malvern East, Melbourne
  • The studio is fully equipped with wraps, bonnets, headbands and backdrops
  • Bathroom and Changing facilities
  • Client Wardrobe available for mums
  • Contained area where you won’t have to worry where your toddlers run off to.
  • It’s warm, peaceful and set up for comfort, just bring your baby
  • Everything is ready so you can relax and enjoy the experience

4. Clear Pricing and Packages

Make sure there are no hidden costs with photographers. Ask what’s included, session fee, packages, number of edited images, prints or digitals. Do they charge more for parent images, etc. Are there options to upgrade later?

At Niki Sprekos Photography:

  • We offer transparent packages with no hidden costs
  • Digital collections and heirloom quality products available
  • You’ll receive a detailed pricing guide before you book
  • You will have options to upgrade after your session if you love your images (which you will!)
  • Clients love having options to customise their artwork

5. Patience and Flexibility

Newborns are so unpredictable. Your photographer needs to be calm, patient, and ready to adapt. This comes back to experience. Do they allow time for feeding, cuddling, and settling? You need to check with the photographer if they just have back to back sessions that may not suit your family being rushed.

At Niki Sprekos Photography:

  • Sessions are never rushed – we allow up to 3 hours for newborn shoots
  • There’s always time for feeding, cuddles and settling
  • We adjust flow and posing based on how your baby feels
  • You can rest, have a coffee, and let Niki take care of the rest

6. Clean and Comfortable Environment

Whether at home or in studio, hygiene matters. You should be asking your photographer if they have all current vaccinations, especially whooping cough. Is the studio cleaned after every use. Is the space warm and cosy for your baby?

At Niki Sprekos Photography:

  • All wraps, props and surfaces are sanitised before each session
  • The studio is warm, quiet and designed to soothe babies
  • We use natural light, soft tones and curated props for a clean, airy look
  • Safety and hygiene are always top priority
  • Niki Sprekos is always up to date with all vaccinations

7. Reviews and Word of Mouth

What are other families saying? Look for reviews that mention how they handled babies, not just the final images. A good reputation speaks volumes.

At Niki Sprekos Photography:

  • 5-star rated by hundreds of Melbourne families
  • Parents often say they felt calm, supported, and blown away by their photos
  • Many clients return for milestone and family sessions
  • Read our Google reviews to hear real stories from real families
  • Over 270 5 star reviews at Find a Photographer
  • Number One Photographer Listed on Baby Info
  • Photographer Listed on Clever Aussies

8. Connection and Trust

You should feel comfortable and heard. A good photographer listens, explains their process, and welcomes your ideas. Meet or chat before booking to get a feel for their personality.

At Niki Sprekos Photography:

  • Niki builds a genuine connection with every family
  • You’ll feel guided through every step from booking to delivery
  • We’ll talk before the session to understand your style and preferences
  • Many clients say they feel like they’ve known Niki for years after one session

Ask Yourself:

  • Do I feel confident in their experience?
  • Do I love their style and feel comfortable in their space?

If the answer is yes, you’re in the right place.
